Operators & coverage

Where the iPhone widget works

Coverage depends on the available operator data, so a supported city does not automatically include every service there. PT Widgets currently supports official data from three transport networks.

Wiener Linien

Scope
Vienna
Transport modes
U-Bahn, tram, city bus, NightLine and available Badner Bahn services

Live boards and service information for stops covered by Wiener Linien's open data.

LINZ AG LINIEN

Scope
Linz
Transport modes
Tram, bus and other services included in LINZ AG's departure data

Search for LINZ AG stops and see live departures based on the operator's data.

Entur

Scope
Norway
Transport modes
Bus, tram, metro, rail, coach, ferry, funicular and cableway

National stop and departure coverage through Entur, spanning many local and long-distance operators.

What you can do from the Home Screen

01

See departures without opening the app

Medium and large widget layouts prioritise line, destination and minutes until departure, with a familiar high-contrast display style.

02

Pin one place or follow your nearest favourite

A widget can stay on a fixed stop or use optional location access to select the closest saved board. Manual station selection always remains available.

03

Filter the board you actually need

Keep only relevant lines or directions and save walking time so departures that are already unrealistic can be treated more honestly.

04

Continue on the Lock Screen

Long-press a departure in the app to follow one connection as a Live Activity with a countdown on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island where supported.

How widget updates really work on iPhone

The countdown and fresh data are different things

The countdown continues between updates, but that does not mean new data arrives every minute. Opening the app or tapping refresh requests the latest available departures. Supported widgets may also update after meaningful delay or disruption changes.

Real time is attached to each departure

A service may have an expected time from the operator, while another row on the same board is timetable-only. PT Widgets preserves that distinction instead of presenting an entire board as live when only part of it is.

iOS remains in control

iOS ultimately decides when widgets update in the background. Low Power Mode, connectivity and provider availability can cause delays, so PT Widgets marks old data rather than hiding uncertainty.

Important limitations

  • PT Widgets requires iOS 26 or later; it is not an Android widget or compatible with older iOS versions.
  • Background updates are not a guaranteed per-minute live feed. iOS controls when widgets can update.
  • A supported city does not imply every operator there is supported. ÖBB and regional services in Austria are not automatically covered by a Wiener Linien or LINZ AG board.
  • Automatic-by-location requires permission and chooses among saved favourites; it does not silently add nearby stops.
  • Departure accuracy, cancellations, platforms and service notices depend on what the transport operator publishes for that particular journey.

How to add the public transport widget

Do the station setup in PT Widgets first, then finish the per-widget choices in iOS.

  1. 01

Save the stop or board in PT Widgets

Search for a station, open its departure board, and add it to your favourites. You can also create a combined board when several nearby stops belong to the same journey.

  2. 02

Add PT Widgets from the iOS widget gallery

Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, choose Add Widget, search for PT Widgets, pick a size, and place it where it is useful at a glance.

  3. 03

    Choose the source and presentation

Touch and hold the placed widget, choose Edit Widget, then select a fixed favourite or automatic-by-location mode. Filters and display design can be changed per widget.

  4. 04

Check freshness before relying on a departure

The countdown keeps moving between updates. Refresh when needed and check the real-time or stale-data indicator before leaving.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I add more than one public transport widget?

Yes. Each widget can have its own stop, size, filters and design. Some plans may limit how many widgets update after important changes; every widget can still be refreshed manually and update automatically when iOS permits.

Does the widget show delays?

When the operator supplies an expected time, the countdown uses it and the board identifies the departure as real time. Timetable-only rows remain distinguishable.

Does it work without location access?

Yes. Choose a fixed favourite manually. Location is only needed for nearby discovery and the optional automatic-by-location widget source.
